My Portfolio

My practice evolves across many mediums with a key focus on painting and is interested in exploring the representation and depiction of ancient folklore and mythology in the 21st century. My work draws upon the theories from ancient Greek philosopher Plato and the ancient stories of their time. The figurative paintings attempt to reappropriate old stories into a new visual language that a modern audience can find their own narratives within. These paintings display my chosen stories, which are the modernised personification of moral fables.  

 

Oil, inks and acrylics are painted onto handcrafted wooden canvases. The paintings examine and explore the ancient and how it can be applied to current times. The colours and composition tend to be bright and contemporary while the style and narrative are historical. I have combined both genres into something new and individual. I have elected to use these mediums as they incorporate the theme of my art practice, with the oil paint and ink being a nod to traditional art history. However, they are used in a non-traditional way with my choice of imagery and combination of sculptural forms. This lends my work to a 21st century narrative whilst retaining a historical moral theme that a modern audience can relate their own stories to.
